Why Cyber Liability Insurance?

A traditional business liability policy is extremely unlikely to protect against most cyber exposures. Standard commercial policies are written to insure against injury or physical loss and will do little, if anything, to shield you from electronic damages and the associated costs they may incur.

Exposures are vast, ranging from the content you put on your website to stored customer data.
Awareness of the potential cyber liabilities your company faces is essential to managing risk through proper coverage.

Cyber Liability Insurance

Possible exposures covered by a typical cyber liability policy may include:

  • Companies are beginning to have a greater responsibility to protect clients’ personal information. In the event of a breach, notification of the affected parties will soom be required by law in Ontario, and may soon be required throughout Canada. This will add to costs that will also include security fixes, identity theft protection for the affected parties and protection from possible legal action.

While companies operating online are at a heightened risk, even companies that don’t transmit personal data over the Internet, but still store it in electronic form, could be susceptible to breaches through data lost to unauthorized employee access or hardware theft.

  • Your company’s online presence, whether it be through a corporate website, blogs or social media, opens you up to some of the same exposures faced by publishers. This can include libel, copyright or trademark infringement and defamation, among other things.

  • If an email sent from your server has a virus that crashes the system of a customer, or the software your company distributes fails, resulting in a loss for a third party, you could be held liable for the damages.

  • A natural disaster, malicious activity or fire could all cause physical damages that could result in data or code loss. While the physical damages to your system hardware would typically be covered under your existing business liability policy, data or code loss due to the incident would generally not be covered.

  • Hackers can hijack websites, networks and stored data, denying access to you or your customers. They often demand money to restore your systems to working order. This can cause a temporary loss of revenue and generate costs associated with paying the hacker’s demands, or rebuilding if damage is done.

In this day of impersonal technology, aren’t we all just looking for answers and to talk to someone who knows?  If you are like me, sometimes it’s just nice to pick up the phone and speak to a human being who is willing to listen. If you are in an accident, I will be there to help you navigate the claims process and answer any questions you may have. Having the proper auto insurance will reduce worry and make your claims process easier should you be involved in an accident.

Did you know that the date you received your license(s)? Do you know how long you have been listed on an insurance policy? Have you ever had a gap of insurance for any reason? What about the dates of claims going back 10 years or tickets you may have received in the last 3? The majority of people can’t always remember certain details which can affect the auto insurance quote drastically.  I treat the quote process differently. With a quick call, I can take the vehicle and driver details and verify the information through a third party system. This allows me to give you a consistent insurance quote every time.

University and college towns offer great investment opportunities for those looking to own a student rental.  Although these properties can be profitable, they are viewed as higher risk in the eyes of many insurers and require a policy specifically built for these types of properties. Risk Management:

Student rentals can be higher risk if you don’t put a risk management policy in place. Consider the following steps before taking on any new lessee’s.

    • Request multiple references

    • Have annual leases for each student

    • Have a requirement that each student have their own tenant insurance in the lease

    • Have a requirement that all cooking be done in communal kitchen (no hot plates allowed)

    • Inspect the exterior of the property monthly

    • Inspect the interior semi-annually

    • Have an emergency plan posted in the home in case of fire or medical emergency

    • Have a contract for snow removal to prevent slips and falls, or have a written agreement outlining tenants responsibilities in this matter.

Our Testimonials

Insurance today often feels like a 'big box' business—impersonal and frustrating. Many people stick with those big companies, assuming they’re getting the best deal.

    Payment Flexibility:

Are you looking to pay your premium in full to save the monthly finance fee? Maybe you like to pay for your home insurance monthly from your credit card so you can build your reward points. Whatever your preference, we have a solution for you.

Boat and personal watercraft insurance policies can be set up as standalone coverage, or can often be added on to your personal property policy. Depending on the age, type, and value of the boat, there are different levels of coverage. The main coverage available would be for the boat, or personal watercraft hull, along with the motor, boat contents (eg. GPS, fish finders), trailer, and your personal liability while operating the watercraft. It’s always best to deal with a broker who will take the time to explain your boat insurance coverage options to you.
